RacStack

SCS-first OpenStack Billing & Metric Dashboard — Open Source

Usage visible. Costs clear. Bill sovereignly.

RacStack is our open-source billing & metric dashboard for OpenStack clouds. It turns live usage (VMs, volumes, floating IPs) into clear period costs, charts, and exportable billing data — per customer and per project.

Built for cloud operators, tenant customers, and admins — SCS-first in direction, installable on-prem, and supported by us as maintainers and core developers.

Quick Facts

  • Open Source (MIT)
  • SCS-first direction
  • On-prem with Docker Compose
  • Nova, Cinder, Neutron
  • UI in German & English
  • Export incl. XRechnung / ZUGFeRD
  • Beta — active development
  • Support & SLA on request

Beta — RacStack is in beta. Development happens publicly via GitLab issues and is prioritised within a support budget — alongside operational support and SLAs at the customer.

SCS-first — aligned with Sovereign Cloud Stack

We develop RacStack SCS-first: upcoming features follow the standards and practice of the Sovereign Cloud Stack. That is a product direction — not a certification claim.

Today: among other things, support for SCS-conformant flavour names so compute sizes stay understandable and comparable in SCS environments.

Next: we are working toward upcoming price publication standards in the SCS ecosystem (machine-readable prices, comparable offers) — see Discussion #738 below.

Who RacStack is for

A portal for billing — and a workbench for operations.

Cloud / OpenStack provider

Bill tenants fairly, set prices, deliver exports, support customers.

Tenant / end customer

See what projects cost for a period — without asking ops.

Provider admin

See the whole estate, or switch into a customer view for support.

Features at a glance

From a customer-value lens — what RacStack delivers today.

Period cost for every billable resource

Pick a timespan (current / last month, 3 / 6 / 12 months, or custom). Per resource: billable usage and resulting cost — with totals that answer “how much in total?” without a spreadsheet.

VM cost clarity by instance & flavour

Server list with project, flavour (incl. SCS-conformant naming paths), active/deleted state, usage duration, and cost. Customers see which VMs drive the bill; ops see the same for support and reconciliation.

Volumes and floating IPs as first-class cost lines

Separate lists for volumes (name, type, size, status, cost) and floating IPs (address, cost, active vs deleted). Storage and public IPs are first-class — not an afterthought.

Project billing: one table, all resource types

Grouped overview of OpenStack projects with subtotals for usage and cost across VMs, volumes, and IPs — suited to chargeback and conversations that start from the project.

Visual spend analytics

Charts and KPIs (total cost, resource count, usage) plus breakdowns e.g. by project, flavour, domain, or resource type — filtered to the same period as the lists.

Configurable pricing: default → customer → project

Global defaults (€/h flavour, €/GB-h volume, €/IP-h), optional overrides per customer and per OpenStack project. Special deals stay local; most customers inherit defaults.

Further capabilities

  • Tenant isolation via OpenStack domains
  • Admin “see as customer” (incarnation) for support
  • Export: JSON, XML, XRechnung, ZUGFeRD
  • Filterable, configurable, exportable tables
  • Always-on OpenStack sync (fresh usage, retained history)
  • Workbench: connect cloud, user↔domain, prices, catalog
  • Composable portal (widgets & pages in the workbench)
  • Semi-white-label branding (favicon, logos)
  • Account self-service (change password)

Install on-prem

RacStack runs in your infrastructure — not as a black-box SaaS. Typical entry is Docker Compose; details and upgrades live in the public repository.

  • Docker & Docker Compose
  • Connect to your OpenStack APIs (Nova, Cinder, Neutron)
  • Your own persistence (database & cache) under your control
  • Reverse proxy / TLS to your standard (nginx, Traefik, …)

Setup guide, upgrade notes, and configuration: in the GitLab repository.

Support & service from the maintainers

We are maintainers and core developers of RacStack. Beyond the free open-source core, we offer optional contracts for operations and further development.

  • Operational support on your on-prem deployment (SLA by agreement)
  • Prioritised development via GitLab issues within a support budget
  • Onboarding, integration, and operational knowledge transfer
  • Alignment on SCS topics and upcoming price standards

Pricing on request — depending on support scope and your environment (size, complexity, desired SLA).
